We are going to Piedmont and Valle D'Aosta in late August. We are retired (mid-60s and fit) and active. I speak advanced intermediate Italian. We want to go to Turin, Alba, Langhe etc. We like to stay in small pensions, not fancy hotels. Question #1: Albergo/pension suggestions. Question #2: Should we rent a car or can we get around by train and bus??
A car is not needed while in Turin. But I would rent one after visiting Turin.
Langhe. Monferrato, Valdaosta, and all mountain and countryside areas are more efficiently visited by car. However buses and trains exist.
Since Rick doesn't cover that region, I suggest buying the Lonely Planet chapter as a PDF for $5. The Roman Theater in Aosta is worth a look.
Ditto to what Roberto said. You really want a car to take advantage of all Piedmont has to offer. But you definitely don't need/want one in town.
