Need advice for hiking base towns in the Aosta valley

I need advice for which towns will be the best base town for hiking in the Aosta valley. I will be there for 2 weeks in September and plan to stay in two different towns. If necessary I will rent a car. I will be staying in hotels. So I will need to get back to my base town nightly via foot, train , cable car etc. I hope to find a town with good food and accommodations with lots of hiking options. Nightlife and shopping are not required. Any advice is appreciated.

Cournayeur obviously. Some ski lifts should still be running in Sept. Monte Bianco Skyway runs all year. Buses run up both Val Veny and Val Ferret. You won't need a car.
