Flying into Rome with 3 kids (13,9 and 6) before meeting up with other family members for 8 nights in the Chianti area, and then we will spend 2 nights (in order to have one full day in Rome) before flying back home. We are arriving the 25th of July and we don't need to be in Tuscany until the 28th. My husband would like to go somewhere for 3 nights because he feels like he is "missing out" if he doesn't see enough when we travel. It was hard enough to get him to commit to 8 nights in Tuscany, but I convinced him.
Any suggestions? I was thinking Umbria, but maybe it's too similar to where we are going? Keep in mind that when we arrive in Rome we will be tired and jet lagged, but he wants to go straight to wherever we are going for 3 nights. Any help would be appreciated!!
Thank you
Rome needs more than two nights so I would add it there. Two noghts only gives you one day in a citywhere five days would be a minimum.
However, since your husband wants to head out somewhere, what about Florence? Or Bologna?
Will you be near Lucca on your eight days in Tuscany? It is a walled city and you can ride bikes in the park on top of the walls.
Umbria is similar to Tuscany but less crowded. Perugia, Assisi, and Spello are all wonderful.
We prefer to be outside of the city with kids, especially end of July/August, so we just want to give them a taste of Rome. We both have been before and have seen most of the sites. Yes, we will be near Lucca, which we most probably will visit while in Tuscany. I was thinking of more of either another area in the countryside or seaside. Personally, I would love too go to the Amalfi coast again, but not with the kids and not after flying into Rome!
This might be too crazy for your family but it's an option. Venice is 3hrs 45 minutes by train from Rome Termini. Don't forget the additional 30 minutes plus transfer time from airport to train station.
We flew into Venice with our kids, spent a few days, and then took the train to Rome. The previous poster is suggesting you do the reverse. The train ride was super—scenic, clean, quiet— although after a very long flight overseas, not everyone is capable of enjoying the first day so that is a consideration. Upon arrival, one of my kids collapsed in his bed and we couldn’t even wake him for 12 hours You just never know and have to be cautious the first day after arrival.
Orvieto is just an hr by train from Rome. You can pick up a car there for your Tuscany time. Alternatively you can get to bologna on a high speed train in 2 hrs from Rome.
OP said they are flying into Rome July 25 so I figured she had already purchased her plane tickets.
Yes, I have my tickets. These are all great suggestions and I appreciate your responses!
After some thought last night I think the best thing may be to rent our car in Rome from the airport and drive somewhere within 2 hours of room for a few days to get over our jet lag and relax with the kids. Orvieto area may be a good option. Was also considering Sperlonga area or maybe Maremma?
I forgot to mention before that I have been to most major cities (some of them multiple times) so we welcome the countryside, especially with 3 children.
Keep in mind that when we arrive in Rome we will be tired and jet lagged
Exactly why you don't want to get a car at the airport and begin driving. If you want to get your next destination, take the train and relax.
