knautah,

A few years ago we took a walking tour of the city with Alessandro Schezzini (recommended in Italy). While Alessndro can't take you into any of the sights, I have to say it was one of the best city tours I've taken. He is passionate, knowledgable, and friendly! We took the city tour first and then the bar tour. Both were great!

Also, I will be in Venice soon and will take my first tour with Walks of Italy. I've read great things about their tours!

look at www.toursbylocals.com and choose Venice to see all of the local guides and their reviews. We've used that site to book several guide in several different cities. Of course the main sites in St. Mark's (San Marco) Square can be see on your own with little need for a guide.

Yes, Alessandro does 3 tours when I saw him last year, The Bar (cicchetti) tour, the Offbeat tour (photo spots in the back alleys of Venice, and the Burano-Murano tour. He does have minimum numbers to do a tour.
Visit his site, http://www.schezzini.it/ and contact him by email.

We just spent 4 full days in Venice. I just wanted to suggest an alternative. Part of the joy of Venice is just exploring, and getting lost.

If you want more info and structure A good guide book or even Rick Stevens walking tours can give some wonderful information as would an iPhone. Additionally, If you do some planning ahead of time and also Involve your kids you can probably have a great time alternating who takes the lead in exploring.

Anyway, just a suggestion.
