We're driving from Castelrotto in the Dolomites to Marco Polo airport for an international 12:00 p.m. flight and will be dropping off our car at 9-ish. Is there some place or town -- an agriturismo, a hotel -- interesting with great food within an hour or less from the airport where we should spend the night before our flight? Need fairly easy parking. Treviso? Or is another place better? I'm a retired architect/sketcher and love to sketch places we stay in. We're in our 70s, like people watching and meeting local people and good local food. My husband is an editorial journalist.

Treviso gets my vote! We loved the neighborhood of the northwest corner of old Treviso, near the civic museum. There are three hotels or B&Bs near there. There is parking at the stadium. Very easy to drive the 40 minutes to the airport and return a car —- that’s exactly what we did.

Architect? Go to Vicenza the home of Palladio. There are many buildings he designed in the Centro Storico as well as the Roman Theatre. Just out of the city, a short walk apart, there’s La Rotonda the basis for Jefferson’s Monticello) and the Villa Valmarana ai Nani. The Hotel Campo Mario is conveniently located just outside the city center and provides parking. It’s a short walk from there to any of the attractions in the city center.

I recommend Treviso.
A cozy town with few tourists and great food. Easy parking. About 30 minutes to the airport.
If you want something by the water — Chioggia.
Like a little Venice, very beautiful. Lots of great food. About an hour to the airport.
Closest option — Mestre.
Practical, but not very charming. Good if you just need a place to sleep.
