I am planning a trip to the Italian Riviera in spring 2009 (yeah i plan a little ahead) and I'm looking for a base town to explore from. I have been to the Cinque Terra but I am looking for an alternative. I would prefer a town with a market area and I want to travel by train only. Any ideas?

Jeff, we were there most of the month of September '07 based in a small hotel just outside of Portofino for the first week. We really liked Santa Margherita Ligure although we found prices anywhere in the north to be higher than the Amalfi Coast region.
