Any suggestions for places to stay/rent for 5 days or a week in the countryside near Milan in late September.

Is there a specific reason why you need to stay in the countryside outside Milan other than a fondness for ugly places?

How about the charming town of Bergamo? It's about an hour NE of Milan by train.
