Near Cinque terre but not in the exact place

We are looking for something near the Cinque Terre but not the specific villages, as they will be over-run in late September. Any suggestions for a 2 night stay? We will be travelling from Turin to Florence.

We have enjoyed our two visits to Santa Margherita Ligure. Also look at Camogli and Portovenere.

Levanto might be a good choice as well. If you are using a Cinque Terre trekking + treno pass to get around, travel on the regional trains from Levento to La Spezia and the 5 villages in between them are covered as well as the little bus that runs between Corniglia's train station and the village itself.

Otherwise, each train ride is 5,00€ a pop within the CT region.

The Rick Steves tour I was on stayed in Levanto, which is the next train station north of the CT villages. Just a few minutes and easy.

Levanto - not the tourist hordes like the CT but close if you want to visit the villages. 4-5 minutes by train to Monterosso or you can take the coastal boat. Plenty of good restaurants. I would stay at Albergo Primavera again.

But are you intending to actually visit the village and/or hike? If you are, I would still stay in one of the villages so as to enjoy it in early morning and evening (and I am NOT the biggest fan of the place). If you are just looking for something in Liguria, Camogli is nice.

I also like Bonassola, Moneglia, Sestri Levante (in order of distance from Monterosso), all within minutes from Monterosso by train.

OK, going back to your original post:

specific villages, as they will be over-run in late September.

It does not matter where you stay if you intend to do your visiting of the busy 5 CT villages during peak visitor hours. The whole reason for staying overnights in Monterosso, Vernazza, Cornigila, Manarola or Riomaggiore is to be able enjoy them during the golden hours that the day-tripping crowds have yet to arrive in the AM or have moved on in the evenings. Staying in Levanto is fine for, say, more attractive accommodation rates but if the goal is to head into the CT region every day from there, you won't escape the crowds. Does this make sense?

So are you intending not to explore the 5 Lands at all?

We spent a week in Camogli one November and loved it. I think I would avoid weekends, though, in September.

I have stayed in multiple villages outside of CT...as well as in Monterosso & Vernazza. Rapallo, Chiavari and Lavagna are all quite lovely....and withing a short train ride of the CT. I also enjoyed taking a ferry ride from Monterosso to Riomaggiore to see all of the CT by sea...amazing view. Enjoy the Ligurean area...so much to offer! like Pesto to die for....yum.
