I am flying from Atlanta to Rome on Delta Airlines. We have a connecting flight to Palermo on Alitalia. How easy is it to navigate the Rome airport? We are doing carry on. Do we have to go through security before going to our gate?

Sure. It is decent airport to pass through. Signage is good. Is you connecting flight on one ticket or two. If one, you will go through immigration in Rome - that could take from 30 minutes to a couple of hours -- just depends. Sometimes you can stay behind security if on one ticket. As I remember from Rome I think you need to go to another terminal so you will have to go through security again.

When we changed planes in Rome, one ticket on Alitalia, we went through a smaller passport check, only one person was ahead of us, so we were through and done in minutes. The route you need to take was very well marked. FCO is a nice, modern airport.
