In early December my husband and I will be in Rome for five days, three days open, and then Napoli for five days before returning to Rome. I'm interested in hearing about beautiful places to spend a few days somewhere between Rome and Napoli - maybe mountains, smaller villages, etc - let me know what you've enjoyed!
It's kind of a tough one because it is so preferable to take the fast train between them, plus the weather considerations.
First, the obvious question is if you have been to the Amalfi Coast before--because the easiest thing will be to tack on the nature stuff while you are in the Naples area. The Cilento coast is gorgeous and not far away. You could take a train to Salerno and pick up a car. All of this being weather-dependent and requiring some flexibility of course.
If you are set on exploring the area in between * by car*, what I always do when starting any trip plan is zoom in on Google Maps and look to see if there are any parks I might be interested in. Perhaps Terracina-Sperlonga-Gaeta and excursions into Monti Aurunci park?

Thanks for the great Google map suggestion, valadelphia - we've focused in on the town of Pico, which is close to or in the midst of the Aurunci Mountains - and have found a charming accommodation which offers cooking classes. It looks like a great place to hang out for a few nature days!
Cool--I've bookmarked it for "one day" myself! Looks right up my alley--https://robertoalborghetti.com/2023/06/08/places-pico-is-one-of-the-most-beautiful-villages-in-italy-the-middle-ages-are-spectacular-here/
I saw your other post later that you will be getting some time on the Amalfi Coast as well. Please report back on how the drive goes!
