Italy - National Strike on December 2nd

This is a posting from "The Local Italy Newsletter". If you're traveling on this day be sure to look for updates!

"National strike on December 2nd

After months riddled with nation-wide demonstrations, travel to, from and across Italy will continue to be disrupted by strikes during the last month of 2022.

The demonstration that’s currently expected to create the greatest amount of disruption will take place on Friday, December 2nd and it’ll be a 24-hour national strike affecting airline and rail travel as well as local public transport lines.

Staff from Spanish airline Vueling and public transport companies in Udine, Trieste, La Spezia, Naples, Foggia and Bari have already announced that they will take part in the strike.

At the time of writing, it isn’t yet clear if essential services will be guaranteed and, if so, which ones and at what times."

After months riddled with nation-wide demonstrations

that never happened.

it isn’t yet clear if essential services will be guaranteed

The lists of national and local trains guaranteed to run during strikes on working days are available on trenitalia.com . Nobody doubts those trains will run. As always local means of transport inside cities will run before 9 AM and after 5 PM, with local differences depending on each city customs.

As always cabbies won't join the strike. Same for most of the private buses to/from main airports and for many high speed trains' workers.

If I were you, I'd find a better newsletter or, at least, a second source.

Dario, thanks for mentioning this. I'm landing in Rome on Dec. 2nd and was planning to take a taxi from FCO to my hotel, so this is a relief.

I don’t see much additional info either…it’s probably complicated and (maybe completely unnecessary) but, would it be wise consider pre-booking a limo service from the airport to the city center for that day in case there is a lot of competition for available taxis?

We got caught up in a strike back in October. Went to check in to our flight only to find that it was canceled the following morning from Rome to Paris. It was a nightmare trying to rebook as everything the following day was full. We ended up leaving Rome that night via train to Milan - arriving at 11 pm, just so we could catch the next morning's train to Paris. Trains were filling up, and it was not pleasant. Wasn't ideal, but we got to Paris on time. If you even think there could be a strike, have a solid Plan B in place. It was very stressful trying to rebook transportation last minute.

I'm supposed to be landing at FCO at 11:20 AM with Delta. There's been no indication from Delta that the flight isn't running... but I can't tell if this affects all flights or just Vueling.
