National Archeologic Museum in Naples on May 1st. Bad Idea?

We would like to tour the museum on Friday May 1st as it makes sense logistically. We would leave Sorrento in the morning via private driver, tour the museum, train to Rome for our last night before our flight home on Saturday. As May 1 is a holiday, will the museum be packed with locals? We can get up early and be there when the museums opens but I prefer to sleep in a little bit and get there about 10:00 as it will be a long day, but we do have all day to get back to the Rome airport where we are staying . Does anyone have advice for going to the museum on a holiday?

I would first check to make sure the museum will be open. Next question is will it be a free day. After experiencing a free day many years ago in Florence, I would never do that again. Other than those 2 issues, I say go for it.

I didn't go to the museum but 2 years ago I was in Naples visiting a friend. Naples was packed with people that day. Italians will be on holiday. Capri the next day was also jam packed with Italians.

We visited the MANN museum over Christmas holidays, Naples was packed but the museum wasn't, busy yes, packed no. There was probably a 45-minute wait to enter, but as we had the Compania Lite 365 ticket, we just showed them at entrance and skipped the line. So I would look into line skipping options on their website, if possible. ENJOY!! It's a fabulous museum. Cafe is delightful, and there are couches outside cafe which we 'visited' several times with sore feet! I should have added, YES, I would visit on May 1st, given that it's not a free day.

^^^ I would echo all of the above.

Word of warning… While enjoyable, the RS audio tour often didn’t match the actual layout or collection as of last November

There will be guides offering tours right at the door. In retrospect, I would have hired one.
