Narrowing down the Venice Museums...best for kids (6 and 10) - mid-September visit

Good Morning!

I am trying to narrow down the multitude of museum options in Venice that would be best suited for two young kids. We prefer unique and interesting over renown. We prefer calm and peaceful over "must see".

That being said, we already have St. Mark's Clock tower, St. Marks and Doge's Palace on our list. So we're getting some of the "must see" nailed down.

I've heard Ca’Rezzonico is good, but it looks to be much of the same you'd see in Doge's or elsewhere. The Accademia looks to be a place where I'd have to DRAG my children through and there would be little to no appreciation of the works in there, at their age (and very busy I would assume).

The Guggenheim looks accessible for my kiddos, but we're visiting Linz and Vienna later on the trip and there's plenty of modern art there, so I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

The glass museum on Murano is fun, if you can make the time for it, and has the added benefit of a long vaporetto ride, which they will probably enjoy.

Thanks Mary Sue! Awesome input, thanks. We have a day of all islands, so we'll add that. Thanks again for such a quick reply!

Venice is kind of a museum itself. Maybe don't plan too much indoor museum activity and plan more outdoor wandering. The Murano idea is great. If the clock tower (campinile in Italian) in San Marco is crowded, take the two-minute ride to San Giorgio Maggiore across the laguna. Usually not crowded at all with a fabulous view.

In the Basilica, take the time to go to the museum upstairs. .It costs a few euros, but the views inside and outside are great. And you can see the original 2000-year-old horses now sheltered there. (The ones outside are replicas.)

I agree with Laurel - you don't need to see museums in Venice, for Venice itself is the sight. This was true for me as an adult; it goes triple for kids, unless there's something specific in one that interests them.

We just returned from there a couple of weeks ago, and we had taken our 9 year old son. He loved the Doge's Palace and the Secret Itineraries Tour. But honestly, he loved wandering around, riding the boats, and looking at the sights more than anything else. We did a mask-making class at Ca' Macana, which was the biggest hit of our time in Venice (he gave it a 25 on a scale of 1-10, and he's not an artsy kid at all!).

Don't go to the Guggenheim. My daughter hated it* (7). Too modern. We handed our map to her and let her lead toward the end of the day. She loved it. You are on an island, you can not get too lost! We found local parks for her to run around in and burn off energy. She loved Murano and Burano. We visited the important sites early in the morning before the crowds and she lost focus.

Dana, brilliant suggestion! Thank you for that, what a perfect suggestion!

csu15269 - very good feedback. We won't go Guggenheim!

We're going to Blue Moon beach on Lido, so that's another kid friendly activity.

Thanks again!
