My family of four will be traveling to Napoli by train, staying a few nights, and then traveling to the Cilento Coast by car. My question is: should I rent the car in Napoli? If so, where (want to minimize City driving)? Or, maybe, take a train to a nearby city (maybe Pompeii) and picking up a car there? If we choose to get the car in Pompeii, is there anywhere that we could securely store our luggage while we visit the ruins?
Maybe more than in any other city, I’d definitely recommend avoiding driving in Napoli. Renting at the airport is one option to avoid downtown streets, and although that would come with an airport location surcharge, could be well worth the relatively small extra charge. As you mentioned, renting in a totally differ t town might work. We didn’t have bags with us at Pompeii, so I can’t confirm luggage storage options. In Ostia Antica outside of Rome, a large site but not as heavily visited, the guards at the entrance let us stash our bags in their small office, but we lucked out and hadn’t confirmed that ahead of time.
There are two locations to store your luggage. The Circumvesuvian station downstairs by the bathrooms in the tunnel under the tracks and at the side of the entrance to the site itself.
There are several rental agencies in this area.

We love the Cilento area. The further south you go, the more beautiful it becomes.
Airport or in Salerno should be fine.
Would love to hear about your Cilento trip when you return--I loved Pisciotta!
Some years ago, we did exactly this, but hired a car in Salerno. The pick up office was quite near the station.
Apart from extra cost, the airport isn't a bad place to rent either, as you very quickly get onto the Autostrada.
Enjoy Cilento, it is one of my favourite "quiet areas" of Italy - I particularly like Castellabate, but anywhere in the region is likely to be great.
You might also like to visit Maratea on the coast. It was gorgeous and not crowded.
