Naples vs. Sorrento

What is a better city to stay in for a two day visit? One day will be spent in Pompeii and the other in whatever city we stay in.
We will be coming by train from Rome and back to Rome.

I would definitely choose Sorrento as a vacation destination. It's only about a 15 minute train ride from Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana Commuter Train to the ruins of Pompeii. Sorrento has some very very nice seaside (cliffside) hotels and wonderful views of the sea and Vesuvius.

Naples is definitely not the "garden spot", kind of like going to Detroit on vacation. Stay in Sorrento as it is much nicer there and it is a good starting point for day trips to Capri, Positano, Pompeii, and Amalfi, etc...

Kim - Sorrento is the choice - Being Italian it gives me no pleasure saying Napoli is one dangerous city. From Sorrento you can take the Sita bus on a very exciting and short trip to Positano (please sit on the right side of the bus for views) , Amalfi is also very close PLUS - the Old Town section of Sorrento has great shopping and wonderful Cafes.

I vote Sorrento as well. Stayed there last year and was a bit taken back with Napoli when returning a rental car at the airport.

If you happen to choose Sorrento, look up Don Pedro restaurant. You will not be let down!

Although it is possible to enjoy Naples, you're much, much more likely to prefer Sorrento.

Another vote here for Sorrento. Also, consider visiting Herculaneum instead of (or in addition to) Pompeii; I felt the town was better preserved.

Naples is fantastic! Is it a little gritty? Yes, but it is not the Detroit of Italy. I'm tired of Americans always ripping on it. It was the center of a kingdom for centuries, and has the art and culture to show for it.

Chris...I'd have to say we have to agree to disagree again:)...Naples is no joke..I"m not going to go into details but yes it is a dangerous city. You'd have to really know the locals like I do and know all sorts of stories..Definetly Sorrento!

Another vote for Sorrento! Although, I really enjoy visiting Napoli, save it for a day trip from Sorrento when you have more time to spend there.

Sorrento is a real gem. I stayed at Casa Astarita and loved it!

Hi, Kim -

I'll vote for Naples. The Archaeological Museum there is incredible, and there are tons of other major sights/museums in the city.

Of course, if your second day is going to be spent on Capri or doing the Amalfi Drive, then Sorrento would be just fine instead.
