Naples vs Salerno vs Sorrento

Hi all,

The more I read the more confused I am!!!!
I will be travelling with my husband and 2 kids to Naples area for 5 nights in early june as part of a 6 week trip. My son loves archeology and history so we are really looking forward to Pompeii, Hurculaneum and the archeology museum in naples.
My question is where to use as a home base. Looking through posts on rick steves a lot of people aren't fans of naples but on lonely planet there are a lot of naples fans. If we look further afield Sorrento seems nice but is over an hour to Naples to visit musum and nearly 50 min to Hurulaneum but is I assume a nicer place to stay. The other one I considered was Salerno but that would mean a long hike to Pompeii from main line Station.

Any thoughts or advice would be great. Many thanks

Sorrento is the best base to get where you want. You can stay 2 nights in Naples and get a feel for it and see the museum. I haven't been to Salerno but it is farther away from action.

I love Salerno! YAY! Salerno! but.....

If your main interests are Herculaneum, Pompeii, and their museum in Naples, stay in Naples all the way......there are some GREAT places to stay and some very charming neighborhoods....I just hope somebody with some great recommendations can chime in....

I would hate for you to spend all that time GETTING to those places (by staying in Sorrento) when Naples is so handy for it.....you can even take other day trips to ischia or Capri should you want the seaside.....

Salerno would be out of the way for the archeological person.....visiting any of the Amalfi Coast or Capri would be perfect to base in Salerno.....

Sorrento is a beautiful place and one of my favorites but if your interests are in naples then stay there as we did .
We also had apprehensions about naples and stayed away for yrs. but I too amvery interested in archaeology. The museum and heraculeum are outstanding! And do not miss Capella Sansevero. Yes parts of Naples are gritty but if you plan, make your visits carefully and return in daylight and use taxis u should be ok. That is what we did and had no prob. Secure your handbags and wallets and be savvy. Taxis are moderate in cost and with 4 well worth the fare and comfort. Streets can be crowded during midday to evening.
We stayedhalf block from opera house at chiaia hotel de charme incl brfast(in RS guidebook)which was perfect for safety, restaurants and walk a bouts.
In fact I know we will return again to revisit all we did again, it was that special.
My spouse and i are seasoned travelers in our 60's but not the lonely planet reader type.
E if u need more info.

Thanks JS. I am leaning towards Naples now. A few of our favourite South American places were a bit seedy, and we still loved them so will give Naples a whirl. Reading a few blogs it sounds like avoid the main station area - Chiaia sounds good.

We were in Sorrento for four nights and Naples for one in November. They are so very different, but liked them both. I don't know Salerno, but think 2 nights in Naples and 3 in Sorrento might be a good plan. Knowing we had only one night in Naples, I wanted to be in the heart of the pedestrian center. Got several recommendations on this board and chose the Hotel Decumani de Charme. Reviews on TripAdvisor were all over the place, and first sight of it from its dreary courtyard was worrisome, but once up the tiny elevator and into its second floor lobby, we loved it. The lobby and huge breakfast room are quite beautiful, and the staff was very helpful. When our RS recommended private guide cancelled on us at the last minute (for a legitimate reason) they called a lovely young guide named Adele de Benedictus who took us on a four hour walking tour of the old city for a fraction of the price our first guide was charging. The hotel's location is wonderful, very near the big Jesuit church.

In Sorrento we really liked Villa Monica. It's outside the city center but Pasquale the owner is very accommodating about shuttling you to town. He's also very helpful for your trip planning and just a fun person to be around. He was great for finding schedules for boats and tours and knows some nice drivers who aren't in the guidebooks, and charge much less, if you just can't face the Circumvesuviana train one more time.

There is soo much more to the Naples area than The 3 sites you mentioned.

Look at the http://www.campaniartecard.it/artecard_Regione.cfm click on Tutta la Rigione.

Then 3 day E32,00 This card allows you 2 free sites, plus reduced prices on the others,

Use the most expensive sites first. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Reggia Caserta.

Click on the pictures and it brings up a map, general description and how to get there.

Transportation for 3 days Alibus, ANM busses, metro, Circumvesuvian and sita busses

on the Amalfi Coast.

It pays for itself if you see Pompeii, the Archaeological Museum 2 trips on the circumvesuvian

and 2 on the metro.

Some of the sights that might interest your son:
Cuma...Greek settlement and Sybils cave.

Pozzuoli...Pretty Harbor town with Greek ruins at its center.

Capua...largest Amphitheater outside of Rome. Lower level is outstanding. able to

wander everywhere.

Castel del Ovo...This one is free and right on the Bay.

Napoli Sotterranea...Naples underground.

Some other favorites:
Palazzo Reale.

Capella Sansevero.

Reggia Caserta.

For an area to stay in look at the area around Piazza Plebiscito.

Great little B&B http://www.orsini46.it/camera-capri_en.html Try for the Capri room.

This is just Naples! I haven't touched Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast or Pasteum

Wonderful area! This past May I spent 3 nights in Naples, then 4 nights in Sorrento, and enjoyed it all. In Naples I stayed at the WONDERFUL Orsini 46 B & B. Nice, quiet area convenient to various sites, and a healthy walk to many others all over town. I walked to the Museum and beyond, and the train station, without any problem. The building isn't much, but the B & B is lovely. It is a large apartment where the owners live in one part, and then there are three lovely rooms, very spacious and comfortable. Two of the rooms will hold 4 people each. The breakfasts are wonderful, brought to your room at the time you request. The owners are very nice and helpful, a youngish couple and their daughter who is about 10. Check out their really excellent reviews, one of the most highly rated spots in Naples, with very reasonable rates. With only 3 rooms, it might be hard to get a reservation though.
I spent one full day visiting the Museum and various neighborhoods and other sites in Naples. The other day I walked early through town to a market and then the central train station, then took a train to Salerno for a visit of a couple hours, then on to Paestum, which has three of the best preserved Greek Temples anywhere, including Greece. They are within some lesser ruins of a Roman town. Evidentally the Romans destroyed most of what they found, but respected religious sites and protected them. There is also a very nice modest-sized museum right by the ruins, for a very nice hour in the museum. The light for photos (and probably heat) in Paestum is best in the late afternoon. Since your son is interested in archeology and history, Paestum would be great because Pompeii etc. are all Roman, while Paestum is mostly earlier Greek, about 2450 years old. It is roughly an hour from Naples to Salerno, then 30 minutes more to Paestum.

From Naples to Sorrento, you might enjoy going by ferry more than the train. Or a private car or taxi will get you door-to-door in about an hour for about 100 euros, not bad with four of you. It was a splurge for me, just one person, but it saved so much time and energy moving with baggage, from inn to transport and then to another inn.

From Sorrento I went twice to spend days on the Amalfi Coast, once on a day tour, and then again by bus. Especially liked Ravello and Amalfi, not so much Positano, which was very crowded and commercial, even more than the others, and in June is probably moreso than May. My other day I went from Sorrento to Herculaneum and Pompeii by train. There, especially at Pompeii, I really recommend you latch onto to a guide by the entrance for a 2-hour guided walk. Talk to a few and choose one you can understand easily and who seems simpatico. I went on my own with a book and the RS audio tour, and I got lost a lot and missed things I only later found were really important and interesting. Pompeii is a really, really big and spread out site. A whole city, literally.

So, do it all, stay a long time, and eat delicious gelato and pizza at every stop. I especially recommend Fantasia Gelato in Naples, they have two or three locations.

Based on your interests I would say that Naples is the best base for you.

You have to realize that Naples is a large bustling city, like NYC, and some people are intimidated by big cities, so no surprise that many prefer Sorrento. Also some people may not have your same interests in archaeology and would rather spend their time people watching from a sidewalk restaurant table at a seaside resort town, such as Sorrento.

One of the best areas in Naples is the Chiaia area (via Riviera di Chiaia from Piazza Vittoria to Mergellina, basically west of piazza Plebiscito), which is central and near the port. I don't particularly care for the area near Piazza Garibaldi (Central Station) and most Neapolitans would advise you against staying there.

I love Napoli and go there almost every year.

Gerri and Larry gave a great list of places to see. I would go for Paestum, too, perhaps an overnight there.

Although it is fair to say that Sorrento is a busy place, it functions mainly as a waterfront (not "beachfront") resort. Naples functions mainly as historical cultural landmark of a gritty city. Pompeii is just as much "closer" to Sorrento as Herculaneum is "closer" to Naples. We're talking about a commuter train, under 3 Euros, that runs twice an hour - this is not some isolated place out in the provinces. Luggage is hard to squeeze into the Circumvesuviana, but lots of people do it.

I don't think anyone mentioned Paestum, which is far enough from Sorrento that we passed on it. But your son might be interested. But the attractions on the Circumvesuviana and in Naples are probably more important to see. Paestum is relatively convenient from the uninspired city of Salerno, which is right on the train from Rome, if you're traveling that way.

Do not overlook the Farnese Marbles in the Naples museum.
