Naples to Sorrento with a stop in Pompeii/Herculaneum

We are arriving in Naples from Rome via the train. It will be my husband and I and our two young kids, so keep that in mind.
I'm wondering two things:
1. Whats the best route to get from Naples train station to Sorrento (Specifically Sant Agnello)? Not sure the local train is best option as I've heard from friends it was a bit sketchy. Obviously with two young kids, I'm going to want transport that is also quick.

  1. We definitely want to spend a day going to Pompeii/Herculaneum. So, I've heard that Herculaneum is actually much better/more interesting. Input on that? Secondly, I'm trying to sort best ways to get there, and most accommodating for kids? There are so many different tour companies out there, its hard for me to decipher what option would be best for the kiddos.

Thanks in advance!

You will get lots of different replies on how to get to Sorrento from Naples. I have not experienced any of them, as I had a rental car as I was headed other places after Sorrento that were accessible only by car.

For our trip to Pompeii from Sorrento we took the "local train" ( Circumvesuviano). We had just a day bag and all our valuables were tucked in our money belt so had no problem or worries. The only "sketchy" thing about the train is it looked old enough for Mussolini to have ridden on it, but it ran fine. We had no kids with us on our trip, but saw no obstacle that would preclude your using it safely with your kids

If using a tour company fits your budget and gives you the assurance you and the kids are safer , then do that. The local train will do the job of getting you there and back. RS has a good free audio tour of Pompeii, if you choose not to do a live guide tour.

Suspect your kids would not hold up for doing both Pompeii and Herculaneum in the same day. Pick one.
