Naples to Sorrento transportation

We are arriving by rail to the central train station in Naples. I know there is a local train to Sorrento. Has anyone used this train...I hear it is very crowded and uncomfortable. Does anyone have another suggestion for this trip? We don't want to rent a car. A personal driver is 90 Euros...a bit expensive....
Thanks.

The Circumvesuvina is fine! It is more like a subway than the other Italian trains. Not that it goes subterranean, it's just basic transportation. Some are older and a bit worn, but there are some newer trains too. Never once felt unsafe, but we were there in December so maybe a little different vibe. Just mind yourselves, be aware and relax! It's an adventure!

I went Italy last year. Yes the Circumvesuviana "train" gets very crowded at peak times. I used the "Train" to go get from Naples to Sorrento and to Pompeii and to visit Haitrians House. It was only crowed on the ride at 4:30pm from Naples to Sorrento. But the other trips were not crowded at all and Pompeii was amazing! I also took a bus to Positano. I loved this little town on the cliffs! It is so charming. Taking the bus was affordable, fairly comfortable and very easy to do. The bus departs from in front of the building train station. The magazine shop in the train station sells the tickets. You can go after breakfast arrive in Positano, have lunch or shop and be back in Sorrento for dinner. The food in Sorrento is fantastic! Primavera Cafe on Corso Italia (the main street) claims to be world famous and has pictures of all kinds of celebrities posted on it walls. I think almost all gelato is heaven. Their gelato is not the best in Italy but its pretty good. There was a restaurant that is in the center, at the top of the stairs, it looked like it might be expensive but it's not. The lemon pasta dish was excellent. The best advice is to relax and go with the flow. Italy is for taking your time and savoring the moment. Have a great time! Andrea

Have you been to Chicago & taken the "L"? That's what the Circumvesuviana is like - although the tracks aren't elevated. It's a little intimidating to visitors, but there's really nothing to it. It's very cheap and it'll have you in Sorrento in an hour. Locals use it a lot; it might be crowded. Like every other tourist destination, when it's crowded keep an eye on your stuff. But it's definitely the easiest and cheapest way to go. And you can't miss your stop - Sorrento is the end of the line.

The CV train is fine if you just use common sense. Happy travels.

Just returned from Italy having done this very thing with no problems. Circumvesuviana is very convenient for Pompeii and Herculaneum as well. Connection directions to the Circumvesuviana in Napoli Centrale Station are easy to spot and follow.

The Circumvesuviana is also how you can visit Pompeii. Honestly, it has a bad reputation, but I never had any problems the two times I road it. It just has an interesting mix of tourists and locals who use it to commute to Naples.
