Hearing horror stories about Circumvesuviana. Is there any other way to get to Sorrento from Naples, but not too expensive.
It might be crowded...but that's not a horror story. That's just reality. I was crammed in like a sardine on a Metrobus in DC 3 weeks ago. But everyone else was crammed in there, too. Welcome to local public transportation.
I know, I know, the infamous horror stories. Personally I think it is mostly just stories. I don't perceive it as any worst than any metro or subway. We have been on the Circum... several times to and from Pompeii and Sorrento and never had a problem or sensed any danger. You need to take reasonable precautions as you would in Rome or Paris but I would not avoid the Circum... It is cheap and convenient.
You can take a boat from the maritime terminal. http://www.directferries.co.uk/napoli_sorrento_ferry.htm
Here's a non-horror story. I am a single petite female - travelled to Italy solo for over 2 weeks - and took the Circumvesuviana between Naples and Pompeii without any issues. Horror stories are way too dramatic. It's an urban commuter system just like any other around the world - it was rickety/on the old side but it was cheap and it worked.
Ditto Frank and Agnes; take the Circumvesuviana or water taxi if coming from town; the Curreri bus if coming from the airport.
Thanks everyone, the reason I say horror stories is I had read a reply to another traveler about being crammed like a sardine in a can with luggage for 1 hour on the Circ. train to Sorrento, and being a first timer at this it scared me a bit.
Did not have any problems on train from Naples to Sorrento, were not packed in but we were traveling at noon so that may have made a difference, no different than any other metro in any other cities we have been to recently. Just keep an eye on valuables like you would any place else.
I've ridden the Circumvesuviana probably 20 times and never had any issue, never saw anyone else have any issues. If I were crammed into a train like you describe, I would get off at the next stop and wait for the next train. I wouldn't stay crammed in like that for 1 hour when the train makes constant stops. Plus which, every time the train stops people get off which frees up seats.
I wouldn't get off the train. They only run every half hour and the next one may be just as crowded. As others have said, people get on and off at every stop. Chances are good you'll have a seat before too long. And yes, a.m. and p.m. rush hours are the most crowded.
I just returned from a girl's trip to Italy with my 2 sisters and niece. We included Sorrento/Amalfi coast on this trip and had no problems with the train from Naples to Sorrento. We also went from Sorrento to Pompeii and Herculaneum one day with no issues. On a previous trip with my husband and two sons we drove to Sorrento but used the train to get to Pompeii and had no problems. You may encounter a 5-year old playing a mini accordian and holding a cup for money but that's about it. Don't worry.
