Naples to Sorrento transport

We are going from Rome to Naples by Trenitalia train. Then we need to continue on to Sorrento. What is the best way? I have been trying to research taxi, train, and ferry online and still can't decide which is "best". Sounds like taxi is the easiest but most expensive - 70 euro? Train is also easy AND cheap, but not safe? Ferry is nicest way to see the coast, but is it a hassle to transfer from train station to port, port to port, cab to hotel in Sorrento? Thanks,
Jessica

Having done the journey many times over the last 30 years, and used all the methods, we now take the most comfortable and easy way ie a private car transfer. It is so nice to be met, helped with your luggage and driven to your hotel door in an air conditioned car. No worries about timetables, mixing different modes of transport etc etc. That's not including the times when sea crossings are choppy or just plain cancelled due to the weather! So if cost (70 - 80 euro) is not an issue, treat yourself and start your stay in a relaxed way and go for the easy option. Here are some companies to ask for quotes. There are others, it is a competitive market. www.gianpierofiorentino.com www.johnnystourservice.com www.amalfi-drive.com www.autoservizidemartino.com http://www.sorrentocars.com/ PS - taxis in Sorrento itself are horribly expensive, they cost more per mile that the private cars charge and any savings made by using public transport for part of the journey can disappear. Eg a 20 minute taxi journey from Sorrento railway station to a hotel in the hills above Sorrento cost 35 euro as against an average 75 euro for the 1 hour 15 minute door to door journey from Naples.

If you arrive from Roma Termini, the most obvious way is to take the Circumvesuviana commuter train from under Napoli Centrale station to Sorrento. Travel time is 68 minutes. The cost is Euro 4. Can't beat that. I always take it when I go down to Positano and it's safe. It's mostly commuters who take it. I don't think anybody who comes from the US should worry about safety anyway. Naples is considered the most dangerous city in Italy and yet the crime rate is lower than San Francisco. So, it's a matter of perspective... Circumvesuviana train info below:
http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Orari Taxi is an expensive option, but it might be worthwhile if it's several of you traveling together and you have a lot of heavy luggage that makes it hard to negotiate the train boarding. But if you travel light. The train is no sweat. Taking the ferry from Naples to Sorrento is crazy. Never done it, not even sure if it's possible. Too many modes of transport transfers anyway. It's not that Sorrento is in an island. They're both on the same shore just an hour from each other.

If beggars or traveling musicians (performing for money) scare you then don't take the Circumvesuviana...or any other form of public transportation in Europe. Other than that, we had no issues on the Circumvesuviana.

Jess,
And if beggars and performing musicians scare you, also I suggest you never come to San Francisco, or you'll have a heart attack.

We took the local train, is just downstairs from the main terminal, about 5 euro, little over an hour and we did not feel uncomfortable at all.

We ended up taking the Circumvesusiana train and it was easy and fine. It was very full so we ended up in the standing area of the first car behind the drivers, so the beggars and musicians stayed away. Seemed fairly safe in the middle of the day.
