Naples to Sorrento

Hi everyone! The last leg of our trip to Italy is Rome to Sorrento. I already purchased train tix from Rome to Naples(arriving at 11:36) where we plan on having lunch and a quick visit before heading to Sorrento. I know that traveling by boat from Naples to Sorrento is more scenic and relaxed but I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle. I know we can take the circumvesuviana line straight into Sorrento but I wouldn't mind a more scenic way. I just haven't been able to find out schedules for boats out of Naples and am wondering how difficult that option is. Thank you for all advice!

The ferries depart basically every two hours starting at 7. The circumvesuviana although called a train is really more of an above ground subway system. At many times it can be totally packed---standing room only sardine packed. We have done the train twice and now prefer the ferry. Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul! Is our best option to take a taxi from the train station to the port? I'm assuming advanced reservations aren't required if they are leaving every 2 hours? Thank you for your advice!

You do not make reservations for the Circumvesuviana.

Go to napoliunplugged.com for a lot of ferry information.

Alilauro.com is a ferry service from Naples Beverello (ferry port) to Sorrento. Plug in your dates and see the schedule. The last one leaves for Sorrento at 5:15.

You can take a bus to Beverello, but a taxi might be easier.

Laura, depending on how many people are in your group (more than 2?) and where you are staying in Sorrento, a nice splurge is to make the Naples-Sorrento trip by taxi or car service, right to the door of your lodging in about an hour, maybe less. Cost is about €100. Quickest and most direct way to go, not so costly if otherwise you are considering taxi-ferry-taxi, and you can make the schedule fit your desires, not the other way around. Also, a taxi eliminates the need to lug your baggage around.

Go to positanoshuttle.com and amalfishuttle.com - both have shuttles from the Naples train station right to your hotel for 70 euros for a couple.

You can also take the alibus---from the train station to just above the ferry port---its 3e each if bought at the tabac in the station---for 2 or more a taxi would be most convenient and drop you right by the port ticket booths.
