Naples to Salerno or Sorrento for a Relaxing Beach Day?

Hi everyone! We’re taking a day trip from Naples on October 4th and trying to decide whether to visit Salerno or Sorrento. Our main goal is to relax on a beach, soak up some sun (hopefully get a tan!), and enjoy a nice meal nearby.

We’d love recommendations for:
• Good public beaches that aren’t too crowded
• Affordable beach clubs with reasonable prices
• Scenic walking areas where we can explore, stroll, and take in the views
• Great local restaurants within walking distance

We also want to stay close to public transportation or within a short taxi ride. We’re looking for a chill atmosphere—not overly packed with tourists—and a place where my husband can enjoy some good food!

Since this is just a day trip, we want to relax, walk around, and enjoy the beach without spending a fortune. Which location would you recommend for a budget-friendly beach day with great food and nice areas to explore?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Definitely not Sorrento, but perhaps Salerno? I haven't been to the latter, but it has decent rail lines, and less crowding.

The trip to Sorrento is not relaxing, riding the regional commuter train that has all the charm of a NYC subway, but without air conditioning, and sometimes SRO. And it doesn't really have beaches, but wooden docks built over the water. So Sorrento wouldn't be my choice.

Wishing you a wonderful vacation and great weather. Safe travels!

I haven't been yet, but what about Ischia or Procida? I think you can take a ferry direct from Naples. It is on my list for next time

Ditto the islands suggestion, ditto not Sorrento, but you could go to Salerno by train then take the Travelmar ferry to one of the closest villages -- Minori and Maiori have nice sandy beaches, Cetara great food, Vietri pottery shops.

Every season is different but I was in Salerno towards the end of October last year and there was exactly one older lady sunning herself on the small beach near the city center of Salerno the Spiaggia di Santa Teresa. It is a small, free beach, but I wouldn't call it glamorous or all that exciting.

In the southern part of the city - the officially labeled Spiaggia di Salerno has a series of lidos and beach fun places with pools and outdoor recreation like you would expect. That being said October is late in the year so these places are probably at the very end of their season if they are open. That being said two years October was wonderful weather and everyone who booked a late season priced visit to the AC looked super smart.

You would probably need to bus or cab from the train station - three minute walk to the beach front road and catch a bus south about 15 minutes or so depending on how far you're going.

Same operation to get the ferries - walk directly out of the train station three minutes to the beachfront and then down to the manmade jetty past the marina to where the ferries are. It's probably 10 minute walk without any sightseeing.

Hope the weather is great,

There are beach clubs along the coast east of Sorrento but I don’t know if they’ll still be open or how close a train station is. We were planning to spend a day there when we were going last summer but then the trip got delayed until winter.
