Since we have only 11hrs how does this sound...take the train to Salerno (not Circumvesuviana) so we can return to Sorrento on the bus along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast? We then would like to spend time in Sorrento and take the boat back to the port..or train.
That should work, and would give you about 4 hours to explore Sorrento. Be sure to allow for connection times between trains, buses and boats, and between the Naples port and train station. It would be wise to research online schedules for train, Sita buses, boat and Circumvesuvuana in advance of your trip.
The more I read on the subject, I wonder if going to Salerno just to take the bus back for the view is worth the time, the bus will be 31/2hrs? thanks for your help
Why go all the way to Salerno? Except for the historic center, Salerno is an unattractive port town and the prettiest area of the Amalfi Coast is further west from Ravello west.
The very best way to explore the coast is by ferry.
Sorrento is a resort town. Ravello, Positano, and Pompeii or Herculaneum would be better ways to spend your limited time.
You could catch a ferry along the AC from Salerno to Sorrento. The port is only a couple of blocks from the station. Check it out on Google Maps. Ferries run until 11 October. Timetable below
Thanks everyone, We love Italy so much we have already taken the ferry to Positano and the bus back to Sorrento. First trip we went to Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii, Maybe we have seen the beauty that everyone talks about along the Amalfi Coast. Just can't get enough, it might be time to settle down and just enjoy a slower pace. How about the Blue Grotto..word is it's too over priced??
Have you considered going to Paestum?
Thanks Sue, looking into that!
