Naples to Positano

I understand there are a couple of different ways to get from Naples to Positano. I'm interested in a direct bus or train route (if possible). Does anyone know which is the better method of transportation, and approximate costs and travel times? We are staying in Naples because it is central to most of what we want to in the area, so this will be a day trip. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

There is no train service to Positano. You have to take the local Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, then the SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano. The SITA bus stop in Sorrento is right outside the train station.

If you are visiting in the summer an native would be hydrofoil Naples to Sorrento and then another hydrofoil to Positano. However, last year saw quite a cut back in services (number of routes, frequency and length of season) so who knows what this year will bring. Unfortunately the summer schedules are usually only available at the last minute so it's difficult to give any further info. You are able, weather permitting, to travel to Sorrento on a hydrofoil from Naples year round. In Sorrento catch the shuttle bus from the Marina up to the railway station and then bus for Positano. Here is the winter hydrofoil timetable. Check it nearer your travel dates. http://www.alilauro.it/orari.php?id_tratta=9:10&lingua=english&cartella=orari (Looks like bad weather has meant that the services were suspended today!) These are the current timetables for the Vesuviana train service from Naples and the bus (Sita) between Sorrento and Positano http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/public/tpl/campania/5070.pdf
