This fall we are flying into Naples on our way to a villa stay in Positano. I understand we can take the train to Sorrento then a bus to Positano or take a hydrofoil. Has anyone had this experience and would have recommendations?

If your schedule follows then a hydrofoil is actually better, more convenient and faster. However be aware that to get from Positano dock to your villa may be alot of uphill walking or worse. So I guess it depends on where your villa is.
The bus from Sorrento stops at the roadside stop just abv Poistano. Then most people go walk down the narrow windy road to their hotels. For me I like both but one may be better for your particular villa situation.

Via sea may not be an option in the Fall. I know they don't run in Nov, not sure when they stop service after the end of summer.
