When I stopped at Pompeii on the way to Sorrento, I used the luggage storage near the ticket windows. It was free, line was short and the people staffing it were very pleasant.
Is the luggage storage locked? Issue with items being stolen?
The Pompeii Scavi luggage storage is behind a counter with human attendants. This is a part of the administration of the ancient site, and it gets good reports on this newsboard. I didn't use it myself, because we stayed in Sorrento and made daytrips to the things we wanted to see.
I believe I've read that the train station also has checking, but I would stick with the huge operation in the ticketing pavillion for the ancient site, even if this is true. It's only about 50 meters away from the steps of the train station.
