We are arriving in Naples (airport) at 10 a.m. and staying in Positano. Is it feasible to go to Pompeii before heading to Positano? What would be the best way to do that?
a little help here; are you renting a car, riding the train, taking a ferry, or is that all open at this point?
With public transportation, you can get to Naples train station, take the Circumvus. commuter train to Pompeii Scavi station. You can stow the luggage there. Afterwards take same train to Sorrento and then CITA bus to Positano. Be aware that Pompeii is lots of walking at least 2 hours. So if you just get in from tranatlantic flight, I'd consider making Pompeii a day trip after you settle in Positano or on your way leaving Positano. Just reverse the route.
We are completely open to suggestion. We are flying in from Barcelona that a.m. and staying in Positano that night. I thought it might be easiest to hit Pompeii on the way out to Amalfi coast b/c we will be heading further south as the week goes on (ultimately staying in Ravello and then in Capri).
Unless your flight delays, my suggestion stands. Do get a local guide at the Scavi gate, 40-50 euro for 2 hours to hit all the highlights and then you can wonder on your own depending on time and interest. Pompeii-Sorrento 30 minute train, Sorrento-Positano 45 minute bus, allow some waiting time.
