Naples to Pompeii Scavi

Hi - We're planning to take a train from Rome to Naples where we want to change trains and take a train to Pompeii Scavi - we need to get there by a certain time tho to participate in the shared tour via Mondo Guide. I am having trouble finding the trains that go to Pompeii SCAVI (I know I am not to take the train to "Pompei" proper). Anyone have any success with this?

Then I read that this same train (the one to Pompeii) goes on to Salerno. I thought we might go there after Pompeii for a couple hours before heading back to Rome (again by train). BUT I can't find the Scavi station to book any of this???

I appreciate your feedback!

In Naples you need to change to the Circumvesuviana train to go to Pompeii scavi (and Sorrento.) This is a separate company than Trenitalia, so you wont find it on their website. Buy tickets at the station in Naples. Here's a link that shows the schedules: http://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule.

If you want to go to Salerno, you'll need to go to the Pompeii station for a Trenitalia train. It's a short taxi ride (less than 2 km) from scavi. There are frequent trains back to Rome from Salerno.

The railway company that operates trains east of the Naples area is called Circumvesuviana. It is a commuter train system with a terminus on the lower level of the Naples Centeale station. You purchase tickets from the agents at that location. The schedules are available if you search for "Cicumvesuviana" online.

I travelled to Pompeii from Rome in 2015. At that time ticket purchases were cash only. You should check to see if that's still the case. I remember the train was packed when I boarded at Naples, and I had to stand for part of the trip.

The train from Naples to Pompeii Scavi continues to *Sorrento * which is the end of the line. If you want to go to Salerno, you would have to make your way to the Trenitalia station in Pompeii.

Happy travels!

I just took the Circumvesuviana this weekend; it is cash only coins or small bills 5 or 10 are preferred. You will see handwritten signs in English at the window of the ticket booth that request this

These are great tips, THANK YOU!!

So what do you think, taking the train from Rome to Naples then taking the commuter train to Pompeii Scavi to do the Mondo tour sounds easy enough, right?

Then after thinking this through further, since we'll have three teens with us, we should head back to Naples and spend a couple hours there before heading back to Rome later that night. It pains me that we're so close to the Amalfi Coast but I question if we'd be trying to do too much in one day. Ideas / thoughts? I thought we could take a boat to Capri even but my husband, bless his heart, is reminding me that we'll have 3 teens with us and thinks this will be just too much lol.

That said, ideas for what we can do in Naples or anywhere nearby along the coast?

Thank you!!

You need to look closely at the times involved. It will take the better part of 2 hours (or more, depending on connections) to get to Pompeii. When does your tour start, and how long is it? Pompeii can take the better part of a day on your own, it's HUGE.

When are you going? If its in summer, please take into consideration the very high heat that you will encounter.

The trains from Pompeii (not Pompeii scavi) to Salerno are frequent and only take 45 min. The last train back to Rome is before 9 pm, I believe. This sounds like a very exhausting day, Going to Capri just wouldn't be doable the same day as Pompeii

If you opt to just return to Naples, then the Archeological Museum would be the obvious place to visit, since it holds the artifacts removed from Pompeii.

l.b. You might want to use the Search box top center to read many past discussions of Pompeii as a daytrip from Rome. Some terms you need to research individually are: Circumvesuviana, Frecciarossa, Pompeii Scavi. Google Maps can show you how far the Trenitalia Pompeii stop is from Pompeii the ancient city, and how close is the Circumvesuviana stop. If you do not use public transportation at home, you may want to think about how waiting time and selecting the right location affects every change of "seat" on a multi-mode trip. For example, the (pay) rest rooms at the nice modern Naples central rail station are quite a long walk in the opposite direction from the Circumvesuviana!

Edit: For what little free time may remain in your day, I'd point out that Naples is an extremely historic city. Whether you are interested in painting, sculpture, architecture, christmas trinket shopping, good food (and pizza), Pompeii relics, Emma-Lady Hamilton, The Farnese Marbles, churches and tombs, there is more than you can do in Naples in one full day, let alone 1/3 of a day. Just note that as is often the case, the train station area is not particularly historic - the opposite, since it was redone a few years ago.

The Mondo tours look to start at 11:00 and last two hours. This is barely a scratch in the surface of Pompeii Scavi: you can (and should) spend more time at the site unless you have only minimal interest. It IS huge and can easily eat the lion's share of a day, and especially so if doing it from Rome. Also, if you are doing it during the summer it'll be hot and tiring, and I would imagine you're going to need to feed those teenagers at some point.

A boat to Capri would involve involve multiple transfers any way you shake it: trains to Naples or Sorrento, public transfer to a port, transfer by bus/funicular again at Capri from port to Capri town... Some of this process would need to be repeated to return to Rome. Capri can easily eat an entire day as there's a lot to see/do on the island, and (IMHO) the best involve time and footwork. It's also really best done as at least one overnight to enjoy the golden hours before the hordes (!!) of daytrippers arrive and after they depart. In short, I'll recommend saving that one + the Amalfi for another trip when you can give the region days versus hours.

As you need to return to Naples anyway, the suggestion to visit the archeological museum before heading back to Rome is a good one I'd echo. The relics collected from Pompeii will have special significance/context after you've been to the scavi.
