We will be in Naples on May 28th & would like to see Pompeii - understand you can take the railroad - are their private guides there? Do you need one? How long to plan to be there - we have a short stay 0900 - 1730 - any replys appreciated...cj in pacnw

For the train, go to the Naples main train station (Garibaldi station). Go downstairs and buy a ticket for the Circumvesuviana train. Get off at the Scavi Villa Misteri stop for Pompei. See www.vesuviana.it for more info. About a 35-minute ride.

It helps to have a guide as the remains can be difficult to invision. We spent 3 hours w/o guide in heat of summer.

There are usually guides offering their service at the entrance to the site. You can usually find other people to share the cost of a guide too.
