We're traveling between Naples and Palermo. We only have about one day to make the trip, so we can't make it a multi-day trek. Our thoughts are taking the overnight ferry...or just fly. The train (9+ hours) seems like a long slog. Any one done it that can offer advice?

Flying gets my vote!
9+ hours for nearly 500 miles on a train (including a ferry crossing portion) or less than one hour on a plane for 180 miles flying over water.
My choice would be the latter.
