Naples to Ischia

Hello i will be in Naples early next May and am thinking of a day trip to Ischia. Has anyone done this? Our hostel is near the ferry in Naples, about how much is the price round trip? Also i might only be in Naples for 3 days and i still want to see Pompeii and Amalfi coast, im not sure if im cramming too much in.

Hi Bryan -
I haven't done this myself but you can do an estimate of the rates here:

http://www.caremar.it/index.php/en/

http://www.ischiareview.com/ferries--hydrofoils-between-ischia--naples-timetables--guide.html

Prices will vary different depending on the type of craft (ferry versus hydrofoil), and dates don't extend into next year so prices could rise a little by next spring. Just my 2-cents? I do think it's cramming in too much if you plan on doing Pompeii and the Amalfi.

You are definitely trying to cram a lot in to three days. Allow a half day for Pompeii. You should also see the Archeological Museum which would take a couple of hours. A full day would give you an idea of the Amalfi coast. There is so much to see in Naples and the Amalfi coast. What is the appeal of Ischia for you? Procida and Capri are closer and to me they are more interesting.

Only 3 days in Naples to incl Pompeii and Amalfi coast.
It seems to me that is all u have time for. Naples, Pompeii, amalfi coast all warrant a min of 1 day. They are block buster sights.
Enjoy your days there. You will find that u would like to go back sometime.

yes i think you might be right, can you do pompeii for 1/2 a day then go along the amalfi coast afterwards? (bus)

Bryan, you can check your bags at the Pompei site, then retrieve them and continue on the train to Sorrento. From there I have taken the bus, that line terminates in Amalfi. If you plan to do this in one day, get an early start. Travel time from Pompei to Sorrento is about half an hour, on to Amalfi is another hour.

I'm asking this for Bryan as I'm unsure of the best solution. :O)

From Amalfi, would it make sense to go onward by ferry to Salerno and take the train from there back to Naples? I think the last Amalfi/Salerno run is pretty early (7:00 or so) but maybe that's not too early for you, Bryan?

I like the idea of that, maybe leaving Naples in the morning go the length of the Amalfi Coast come back from Salerno. What about doing Pompeii for 1/2 day and then going to the top of Vesuvius and back to Naples? So basically Naples/Archeology museum 1 day, Pompeii/Vesuvius day 2 and day 3 Naples to Salerno. The next day is back to Rome so maybe on day three I can stay in Salerno and work my way back to Rome.

Keep in mind that travel by ferry is a bit slower than by bus.

I took the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi and then from Amalfi to Positano, it was a good trip, different perspective than from the road.

I was thinking that, Zoe. By either ferry or bus, though, I'm thinking it makes sense to go onto Salerno than backtrack to Sorrento.

Oops, just saw your latest post considering a different agenda, Bryan. That looks pretty good to me.
