Naples - Sorrento- Positano Transportation (and Pompeii!)

Hi All,
I will be traveling in late June/early July. I will be arriving in Naples by train from Florence at about 2pm. I was hoping to spend about 2 hours in Naples (getting pizza duh!) and then catching a train to Sorrento and ferry to Positano for an arrival around 6pm. But from what I gather from the ferry schedules, the last ferry is at about 3:15pm (really? only 2 ferries a day? am i missing something?). My hotel in Positano offered car service for 120 euros from Naples, or 80 euros from Sorrento. Is this my best option? I don't mind the cost, but would prefer the most economic/efficient option (and i was really looking forward to a beautiful ferry ride!).

I will be spending 5 nights in Positano. On Day 3, I want to take a day trip to Pompeii. Suggestions on how I should do this? ferry in the morning to Sorrento? train from Sorrento. Then catch the last ferry at about 3:15pm back to Positano from Sorrento (maybe we could even wander around Sorrento for a bit).

Thanks in advance for the tips and recs!

What about taking the train from Florence all the way to Salerno instead of going through Naples to Sorrento to Positano? That was recommended to me by others on this site. I'm staying in Amalfi in July and am now planning to go all the way to Salerno on the train and then either take the ferry from there to Amalfi, or a taxi or car. It depends on how crowded it is when we arrive in Salerno.

You're right, it looks like the last ferry from Sorrento to Positano leaves at 14:55.

Welcome to the wonderful world, Amalfi Coast edition, of 'you can't get there from here (easily)'. Thus, the 120 Euro charge Naples/Positano, because they can do it. You know, it might be the best money you'll spend. Otherwise it's after arriving at Napoli Centrale, stay in the station and find the Circumvesuviana commuter train--always fun and games, think big city subway--to Sorrento, probably an hour plus. Then, it's take the SITA bus from Sorrento station to Positano, probably another hour, and even then you might be a ways from your hotel! That scenario is cheap, but in high season it could be a nightmare and quite smelly besides.

Wonder if your driver from the hotel in Positano would pick you up & drive you to a pizza joint in Naples (Da Michele, Trianon or many others), wait while you have a slice (or offer to feed him!), then drive you direct to the Positano hotel? Really, 120 Euro is not that bad--we paid 95 Euro from Naples to Sorrento and considered it money very well spent.

I thought about that, but the ferry schedule isn't much better with that option. I think the last ferry from Salerno is around 5pm, which would cut my time in Naples very short.

Pompei is another story. In non-high season, it's pretty simple. Take the SITA bus Positano/Sorrento (1 hour) then the Circumvesuviana train 45 minutes to the Pompei Scavi stop. The ruins are right there. If you do this in June/July, do it VERY early, like leaving Positano by 8AM. And then you will miss the heat of the day at Pompei as well. Coming back you reverse it, but at noon or early afternoon it could be hot and crowded. Maybe a one-way private taxi Pompei to Positano might be a worthwhile option.

Nope, and I was hoping for you that it was that late. Looks to me like the last one is at 3:30 (15:30) unless they add more for the busiest months of summer.

Ferries run from Salerno to Amalfi, and from Amalfi to Positano later in the day but that would be a little bit of messing around? :O(
