I have 10 days of solo travelling to end a 6 week trip. I'd like to spend it near/around the beach. I've been looking at basing around Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi/Postiano. Giving me access to hanging around the beach and relaxing, and also lots of great sights, fun, food, beer/wine, and hiking. I'm 33 and want to stay in hostels to keep my budget low, but safe, for sleeping, and be able to splurge on other stuff...scooters, pompeii, vesuvius, capri possibly (I heard hiking there is awesome) Where would you guys recommend I home base in the areas I listed? Any hostel recommendations?

If beaches are what you like, Sardinia would be the place to go. But it's not close to any of your listed destinations. If the Gulf of Naples is your target, the best beaches are on the Amalfi Coast. From Massa Lubrense near Sorrento to Vietri Sul Mare and anything in between (including Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Maiori and Minori) would be a good choice. Sorrento itself doesn't have a great beach, but would be a good base if you use the trains to go to Naples or Pompeii. If you rent a scooter then it doesn't matter where you are, because you'll have a lot of flexibility with your own wheels. In that case the Amalfi coast would be a better choice for beaches. Enter "Noleggio" and the city you want. I checked some and they aren't cheap. About 50 euro a day (over 200 euro a week)

Roberto, Thanks for the good ideas and the beach guide!
I'm leaning toward the Amalfi Coast now, especially if I am able to get to a bunch of nice beaches and still go out to the sights of pompeii and vesuvius.
