Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast at Christmas?

It's been 10 years since I've been to Italy, and I hope to take a trip there at the end of December 2011 or beginning of January 2012. I'd like to go to Naples and south. How are public transportation options in the area around Christmas and New Year's? Are sites closed more than just on Christmas Day and New Year's Day? (I don't want to get there and find everything closed.)

Sorrento is a popular destination for Italian tourists over Christmas and New Year. The town puts up lovely Christmas decorations and there are Christmas concerts and street events. It culminates in a big party on New Year's Eve. After that the town more or less goes into semi-hibernation. Tourist industry folk go on their own holidays and many hotels/B&Bs are closed for repairs/renovation. However, life goes on for the residents and there will be places to stay and places to eat/shop, just not so many. Yes, national sites will be open but on shorter hours and remember that the days are short so that will limit your sightseeing. Public transport will be running, on winter timetables, the residents still need to get out and about. Check this site for timetables just before you go, they change at the end of the month and may change again during the school holidays. http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXIV.pdf http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXV.pdf Info on ticket prices etc. http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en&center=inside&colonna=turisti&action=costiera&banner=costiera Ferry services to Capri and Naples may/will be affected by choppy seas which occur more often at that time of the year.
