Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast

We have three nights in the area and I am wondering if this itinerary seems reasonable for March. I know some things may be closed.

Day one - Arrive noon, tour Sorrento
Day two - take private car/tour Amalfi Coast - Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello ( I guess Paetum is too far)
Day three - take ferry to Naples, tour city a bit ( maybe hop on/off bus) go to Museum in Naples
- take train to Pompeii/Villa - tour in afternoon, if time Mount Vesuvius
Day four - Take train to Oplontis and Herculaneum (is there a place to store luggage at train stations??)
- Take train to Rome via Naples

All your activities on Day 3 are not doable. Pompeii will take at least half a day including travel time to get there (2 hours onsite is the bare, bare minimum). You will barely have enough time to see Pompeii and some of Naples. It's not even clear if you can fit in the Archeological Museum unless it's a quick visit due to closing hours. I would get to either the museum or Pompeii first thing when it opens because you're tight on time. Definitely no time to add Mount Vesuvius to the mix.

Ideally, I would set aside a whole day for Pompeii and some sightseeing in Naples, which probably won't encompass the museum. I would leave the museum for the following day and cut something there. Alternatively you can combine Pompeii and Herculaneum for one day because at least they are close together, but even that may be ruin "overload".

How about
Day one - arrive in Naples by train late morning, store luggage, tour museum & city, lunch, train to Sorrento.
Day two - Amalfi Coast
Day three- Pompeii/Villa am, maybe Vesuvius, Sorrento pm
Day four- Store luggage train station, Oplontis, Herculaneum, train to Rome

Could switch day two and three

Or stop at Pompeii Day one and store luggage

Day 1. looks good.

Day 2. Do the Amalfi Coast by ferry, use the bus on the way back. Never plan on the last bus of the day.

Day 3. Ercolano. NO luggage storage at the station here but at the site, 15-30 min walk some uphill. Bus to Vesuvius. Runs every 30 minutes. Evening in Sorrento.

Day 4. Pompeii Scavi. Store luggage at the station. Oplontis is the next station, 5 minutes from Pompeii, when done at Oplontis, head back to Pompeii to pick up your luggage.
Then on to Naples for your train to Rome.

Thank you for the reply..
So there is also a bus from Ercolano
To Vesuvius? I thought the bus was from the Pompeii train stop.

Several people have commented that a trip to Vesuvius is really not that great, especially if you only have 3 days in the area. I recommend seeing the archeological museum in Naples before Pompeii. With a short amount of time I’d do Pompeii or Herculaneum.

The express bus to Vesuvius runs from both Pompeii and Ercolano.
Cost for the express is € 10.

With what you want to see, and the fact you plan on luggage your last day, it makes more sense to do the trip this way.

The Sita bus runs this route to, but I don't know if it drops off at the same level.

Gerri

If we wanted to try and work in Capri on one of the days, how would you alter the schedule? Would you drop Herculaneum or try and combine with Naples or Pompeii? Is it possible to do Capri in March for half a day?

If you want to do Capri, you're going to have to drop Ercolano and Vesuvius.

To me it would be a waste of time to try doing Capri in a 1/2 day.
The port area is IMO just a crowded mess. To really enjoy the island you need to get to Anacapri.

I wanted to see Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis, for Art History reasons, and because I'm an encyclopedic tourist. Do you have a concrete reason for doing all three? Do you have 250 Euros for the day 2 car service? (We also did that, and got our money's worth.)

Although I don't agree that Annacapri is essential for a quick visit, I do think it is ridiculous to talk about a half day Capri trip. The ferry hours are limited enough, the ride long enough, and you haven't even confronted the decision to see or blow off the tedious Grotto excursion yet.

I have another idea.....does this seem doable

Day one - arrive to Naples from Rome, check bags, visit museum, pizza, etc., take train to Sorrento
Day two - Ferry to Capri, spend day, later in Sorrento (depending weather, could switch with day three)
Day three- Train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis
Day four - Private tour of Amalfi Coast with luggage, drop off at Naples train station to return to Rome. - a bit more expensive

This "might work" if you limit day 3 to two sites. While it's probably feasible, I really think Pompeii and Ercolano are way too much for a one day trip. Be sure to check closing times at each site.
