Naples Port - Must See?

Hi, we are taking a cruise that has a port day in Naples. We are finding a variety of tours, which are your top 3 (that seems to be the variable between the tours)? Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, Pompeii? Or Capri? Thank you!!
Update: Traveling in October 20, all adults that are very physically active.
Also, I was advised that it is too risky to try to go to Capri in one port day due to weather issue possibilities, ferry crowding where there might be a long wait and miss the boat....Thank you everyone!

If I may ask one more question...we are looking to travel to Florence from La Spezia port and would just like to explore, any recommendation on how to do this for a group of 8. Thank you!

Pompeii, Ravello and Capri. If possible, tour the city of Naples itself. The Archaeological Museum is outstanding, showcasing items rescued from Pompeii and the views of Naples, Capri, Mt. Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples from Castel Sant’Elmo are beautiful.

They are all very interesting and enjoyable destinations to me , as I have enjoyed them all.
Only u can sort through the choices and decide which is best for you.
Read up on them and then decide.
To have only one day is disappointing . You will be back hopefully with more time on another trip.

Why not spend the day in Naples itself? The Archaeological Museum was wonderful, there's excellent food, and several other worthwhile sites (depending on how long you have in port). I also really liked the Capodimonte Museum, which is an art gallery in the middle of a huge park on a hill above the city, and the Santa Chiara Monastery in the old part of the city.

For only one day I would either take the boat to Capri for the day, take the funicular up to see the Garden of Caesar Augustus and the view and then take a bus to see Anacapri. Or in one day you could see Pompeii from Naples and depending on the time see the National Archaeology Museum afterwards in Naples as it will be more meaningful after seeing Pompeii. You do not really have time to see Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, or Amalfi with one day. It takes a long time to get to the Amalfi coast and there are a lot of curvy roads. Naples felt gritty and traffic jammed and was our least favorite area with a lot of panhandlers.

Month of year? Heat tolerance? Energy or walking limitations? Personal interests? Desire to avoid tour costs?

We had seen Pompeii previously so on our cruise we chose just to stay in Naples and wander around the city. We found it to be gritty but full of life and would do that walkabout again. The National Archeological museum in Naples has lots of the stuff that has been recovered from Pompeii.

Here is want we saw on our Naples cruise stop.

On a tight port schedule, I'd avoid any of these tours except Pompeii. Actually, staying in Napoli sounds much more interesting if you have less than 8-10 hours.

Capri, especially, should be a big no-go. The place is jam-packed with cruise passengers at midday.

Pompeii is a self-contained archaeological site that also allows you more freedom to explore on foot on your own.

hey hey jim
I’ve been on a few cruises and wanting to see what I could. Most ports we stayed in port cities without traveling far. Seen a few mishaps of people missing ship for whatever reasons, crowded sites, traffic, time problems & issues, etc been to Naples for a day trip, enjoyed our day, yes gritty and had garbage but that’s life. one of our best fun days.
Check out culinarybackstreets.com a food/city tour. learn about some neighborhoods, food, culture and still have time to see other areas. You’re close to port and in charge of your own time. Enjoy the lemonicello!! So good

My wife and I were in that region this spring.
My list of placed to go, things to see, in Naples, was SO long and we saw so little.
Naples has a lot to offer. So many varieties of things, so it depends on your interests.

If you’re determined to day trip from Naples, you should consider plunking down the money for one of the super-expensive ship excursions. At least you’d be guaranteed the ship won’t leave without you. Personally, as others recommend, I’d stay in town and enjoy the sites there.
