Naples/Pompeii/Positano

We will be arriving by train in Naples late in Sept., and are thinking of hiring a private car to travel to Pompeii (carrying luggage with us). We're interested in touring Pompeii for several hours, and then travelling on to Positano, where our hotel is. Is this the most efficient plan, or should we go straight to Positano from Naples, and plan an excursion another day to Pompeii? Suggestions of drivers/tour guides is welcome, too! Thanks.

Having a private car stop in Pompeii on the way to Positano is efficient from a time-oriented perspective, but not efficient from a travel-cost perspective. The cost of a direct private transfer from Naples train station to a Positano hotel is around 100 euro. With a long layover in Pompeii, the price is likely to be much higher. Your Positano hotel can probably suggest a driver and quote a price. The trip could be done by Circumvesuviana train and local bus for around 15 euro for 2 people, and there's free luggage storage at Pompeii. For a Pompeii tour guide, try Gaitano Manfredi. I had him on a RS tour, and his 2-hour tour was very informative and entertaining.

Thanks for the advice. Where in Pompeii can you store luggage?

Near the entrance of Pompeii by ticket office. You will not miss it.

It's only a short walk from the Circumvesuviana station to the Porta Marina (main) entrance. Baggage storage is on the far right side of the admissions area as you face the entrance gates. In Sorrento, buses to Positano depart from the far side of the square in front of the train station. Buy your tickets at the shop at the bottom of the stairs. Also, if your Positano hotel is on or near Via Colombo, get off at the 2nd bus stop (called Sponda) at the bottom of town and not the 1st bus stop at the top of town.
