We are arriving by cruise ship and have one day in Naples. We are trying to decide if we can see Pompeii/Sorrento on our own, or if it would be best to do a private tour? Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you
If you are resourceful and have a tight budget it can be done on your own but limit your sights to a ferry to Sorrento, walk around and maybe bus down to Amalfi coast (a must do) and back. If you must see everything alittle bit then you must take a tour. This area is better spent with a multiple day visit. It is jammed packed with great things to do and see. Pompeii is a large area to walk around.Skip Naples on your own, it is crazy and loaded with pickpockets.
if you like to really see pompeii, you can check out Naples' national museum in half day, then half day train to pompeii. it's a little rush, but you get to see all the cool stuff of pompeii. (the treasures are all in naples, and the ruins are in pompeii).
you can also train/boat to sorento to check out the town, then boat to positano. Either way it's doable on your own, but that area deserves 3 days at least.
