We are planning a trip to Naples/Pompeii/Amalfi Coast in Oct while our kids are on a school break. We are concerned that many services will be closed by then for the "off season". Boats, hotels, restaurants, etc. Not very concerned with sunbathing, just want to go somewhere warmer than Minnesota in October. Can anyone tell me how "open for business" that area is in October? Specifically Oct 10-18. Any advice appreciated.
Most things that close for the winter do it in November; Rick's Italy book mentions some of these specifically in listing details. Boats generally run through mid-October, but any particular trip can be cancelled by bad weather (including high winds) at any time of year. Boats are operated by several different companies, with http://www.caremar.it/index.php/en/ being just one of those.
Casting my mind back to 1987, which is quite an effort, and your dates virtually coincide with time I spent in Sorrento/Capri. The weather was perfect, especially after cold, foggy, drizzly Milan. I 'did' the Blue Grotto so I guess all things were still running. I do remember lemon sorbet and pistachio gelato, so it was definitely warm.
Take me back please !!
My visit there was in February based in Sorrento and all the shops and restaurants were open. Instead of being concerned, be happy that you'll miss most of the summer crowds and heat.
Cities and major sights will be open, some resort areas may begin shutting down at the end of October.
