Naples - Pompei - Sorrento

After enjoying a wedding on the Amalfi Coast, we will leave Positano on a Thursday morning and fly out of Naples the following Sunday morning.

Basically, we will have 3 nights ( but really 2 1/2 days) on our own before flying out of Naples in late May.

Would love suggestions on what we should do and where we should stay. Should we make Naples our home base and maybe do a day trip to Pompei or Sorrento? If so, what area in Naples should we stay? If not, what do you suggest? Hotel and/or airbnb suggestions welcome as well.

Naples is the obvious choice, since you'll want to be there for your last night anyway. You can day trip to the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum (don't try both on the same day) using the Circumvesuviana train. The RS guide has a good walking tour of Naples, which starts near the National Archaeology Museum (a wow). You can also day trip to the isle of Ischia or by train to the palace of Caserta. There's not much to see/do in Sorrento.

I think there's more than enough in Naples for 2 - 2.5 days - the Archaological Museum, the Capodimonte Museum, the catacombs, the cloisters of Santa Chiara, etc. That would be my recommendation. I don't think there's anything you'll see in Sorrento that will be substantially new to you after staying in Positano.

See if you’re interested in the Royal Palace of Caserta. There’s a three-day, five-site ticket for Pompeii/Herc if you are really crazy about Roman sites. Some people find Naples too urban for their tastes, but it has the most to do, while still having good transport options. Do you want to see Capri? Unfortunately Paestum is in the other direction from Positano, but theoretically possible from Naples, on a long day.
