naples,pompei,Positano

Hi fellow travelers!
We are traveling from Rome to Naples early April and would love your expertise on a few questions1
Firstly, which train and train station should we travel from Rome to Naples? Staying very centrally located in Rome.
We have been to Europe and Italy quite a few times and do understand we are trying to do too much in a few days!
Would like to make a quick trip to Pompei from the train station before traveling to Positano to our hotel. Where can we drop luggage? Maybe a hotel has this service at a cost? Train to Pompei? Will then hire a private car to take to Positano.
Also would love to book a boat trip along the Amalfi as well as a few hours to Capri. Where can I check schedules for ferries, boats , etc.? Schedules do not seem to be posted for 4/7-/4/10..

Thanks for direction and any help you can offer! Also recommended car service from Naples to Positano.

Thanks a bunch!!

Basically two ways to get to Positano. Basically the trains leave from Termini (an odd one or two from Tiburtina) and you could go to Naples, or continue on to Salerno, from either, a bus to Positano would be cheapest. If you wanted to do Pompeii, providing you leave early enough in the day from Rome, you could go to Naples, then get on the Cicumvesuvia rail line, take that to Pompeii, check your bags there, see the ruins, then back on the train to Sorrento, catching a bus from there to Positano. A cab may be available at Pompeii to take you to Positano, hiring a private driver to meet you, would be pricey.

As for boats along the Amalfi coast and from Positano to Capri, they are seasonal, not sure if they would be running in early April, they are more of a high season thing. There certainly would be a ferry from Naples to Capri, maybe Sorrento to Capri those dates.

You could plan on some time in Naples, mainly Pizza and the Arch. Museum, but worth a long morning or afternoon. Probably more attractive if you were to save Pompeii for the second day, hit the ruins early, then into Naples.

Thanks Paul!
You mentioned checking bags in Pompei. Any particulars you can share?
Still pondering our itinerary! Did you know if there is a train from Sorrento to Pompei?
What do you think of Pompei early in the day out of Sorrento then back to catch a ferry to Capri?
Is this doable or crazy!?
Thanks again for your suggestions.

There is a frequent train from Sorrento to Pompei. It is so called Circumvesuviana line which connects Sorrento to Naples. It has many stops, one of them is Pompei. Sorrento is a very good base. We stayed there early October. Went to Pompei. Other day by bus to Amalfi. Back to Sorrento by boat with stop in Positano. If you have more days you can also go from Sorrento to Capri by boat. I didn't see anybody booking the boat. Simply come and buy ticket. Car service from Naples to Positano could be quite expensive. I would take a boat. I am not sure if there is a direct boat but you can certainly go via Sorrento.

We will have luggage coming in to Naples. We have booked a 3 night stay in Positano. I am wondering if we should then take the C train to Sorrento then a boat to Positano with luggage. Second option would be to board C train from Naples with luggage and go to Pompeii . Do u think there would be a place to stow luggage after arriving in Pompeii ? Then Pompeii to Sorrento and boat to positano.
Thoughts? Would like to check Pompeii off the list early so we can have a bit more time to "hang"!

There is luggage storage at Pompeii just after you enter the site.

If coming from Naples via train I seem to remember that there are two Pompeii stops on the train, be sure to get off at the correct one, I think it is Pompeii Scavi but not sure. The ruins are only about 500 feet from train. When you get back on train going to Sorrento I think it is only about half hour. Sorrento is last stop. Then I would take the bus to Positano as the bus is right at the train station, to me it would be much easier than going down to ferry. At Positano, be sure to get off at the second Positano stop. If you get off at the first Positano stop you then have to get a local bus into town and that is a real pain.

Wow! You all have given me fantastic information and have clarified my travel path!!
We will arrive in Naples in the am and take Circum. Train to Pompeii, check bags there. Take C. train to Sorrento then bus to second stop in Positano!
Just to clarify....we will be arriving on Trentalia in Naples. I believe I need to go to another train station to catch the Circum. Train to Pompeii. Particulars?
Also when arriving in a Sorrento on the C train where exactly is the bus depot or stop for Positano?
I am thinking it will be obvious but just like to be prepared!
Thanks a million for all of your knowledge and kind help with our adventure!

The Circcumvesuviana train leaves from the same Central Satation, just one floor down.
