Naples, Pompeei and Vesuvius Transportation

I've got 2-3 days in the Naples area. I wanted to go from Naples to Pompeii in the morning, then Mt Vesuvius in the late afternoon, and then back to Naples. Can anyone tell me what they best public transportation method for this would be?

Here is the site to get the train times for the Circumvesuviana train line from Naples(FS) to Pompeii Scavi http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en Near the Porta Marina entrance (the nearest to the train station) to the Pompeii site you can catch a bus to Vesuvius then return to Pompeii for the train back to Naples. Not done it myself but you could ask for the exact location of the bus stop at the information office which is in the ticket piazza at the Porta Marina site entrance. http://www.unicocampania.it/files/locandina_vesuvio.pdf Just in case you have not seen it, here is the official Pompeii site http://www.pompeiviva.it/pv/en/homepv.htm

I've visited Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius on the same day. Buses to Mt Vesuvius leave from the piazza where the tour buses off. From the Circumvesuviana station, continue past the Porta Marina entrance and follow the road to the left. That will take you right to the piazza. Check bus times before your morning visit to Pompeii, and plan your afternoon around that. Bus trip up to Mt Vesuvius takes 45-60 minutes and walk up to top takes 20-30 minutes (very steep), so allow adequate time between buses to enjoy the views from the top. The Circumvesuviana runs early and well into the evening, so you really only need to be concerned about not missing the last bus back to Pompeii.

I am also looking at visiting both Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius in one day. Frank - Since you have done this, did you feel it was a worthwhile experience going up Mt Vesuvius and recommend it?

I just returned from the area and went to both locations.
The Circumvesuviana train system will take you to Pompeii for about 3.2 euro, and when finished there I would take the trolly looking shuttle to Vesuvius. The ride cost me 10 euro plus 8 to enter the park at the top of the mountain. On a clear day it's quite a view. I spent about 4-5 hours at Pompeii, and the Vesuvius excursion - about 3.5 hours with travel time.
