Naples or Rome?

I am planning a trip for October. We want to stay in Sorrento. We are looking at flying into Rome or Naples. It's cheaper to Rome, but I can't find out how much to train is from Rome to Naples. Any help? Also, we are looking for somewhere nice in Sorrento that will have a sea view from the room.

From Rome to Naples the standard 2nd class fare is 10.50€ on regional trains, 19.50€ on faster ICplus trains, and 36.10€ on EuroStar Alta Velocita trains. See the timetables and fares at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. Enter a date within 60 days from today to get accurate results.

For lodging in Sorrento, consider either Il Nido or La Tonnarella. Il Nido is less expensive, but it's farther out of town. But, they have their own shuttle service to/from town. La Tonnarella is still a little bit out of town, but it's right on the coast, and it has its own private beach.

We spent a week at the Hotel Mediterraneo in Sorrento with a sea view room last month. It is a little far out, but there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel. They have a lovely pool ( which I didn't get to enjoy as the weather was still too cool). They provide a robe and slippers which is a nice touch. All the staff was friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was outstanding.

Thank you for the input. Additionally, did you go to the Amalfi coast while you were there? We want to do that as a day trip. Any suggestions?

diane, could you clarify your last Post? Sorrento IS on the Amalfi coast, AFAIK.

I'd suggest flying into Rome, especially as it's less expensive. Take the Leonardo Express to Termini and then the train to Naples. From Naples to Sorrento, I believe you'll have to use the Circumvesuviana (can't recall the details?).

If you interested in a really NICE restaurant in Sorrento, let me know and I'll send you a PM with the info (it's pricey but EXCELLENT).

Cheers!

Ken,
What I meant was the actual towns of Salerno, Amalfi, and/or Positano. The books suggests bus one way and boat the other. Is this a good day trip? Also I would appreciate any information you have about where to eat. My sister is especially interested in bakeries. Thanks.

Diane-
We just got back from Italy and took the train from Rome to Naples and then the circumvesuviana to Sorrento. It was quite easy. From Sorrento you can take the ferry to Capri, the circumvesuviana to Pompeii (and then get a bus to Vesuvius or a train to Paestum)and the bus to other towns on the coast. We stayed at La Solara (owned by Best Western) and it was amazing. A little out of town on the Via del Capo but they had a shuttle bus that ran every hour that dropped you right in town. The hotel was amazing- we had a room with a view of Capri and the Bay of Naples and an extremely large private balcony for 139 euro a night. Rooms without a view were 119.
It also had free breakfast and internet.

Diane, I highly recommend La Tonnarella in Sorrento. It is absolutely wonderful! It's only a 5 min walk downhill into town (with the coast and gorgeous scenery as you walk) and an easy walk back up. Or, you can take a bus back up. I'd recommend a room with a terrace, the view will blow you away. They have a restaurant with great, inexpensive food and indoor/outdoor dining. The rooms are nice, beds good, very good breakfast buffet, large lounge area (great for meeting other travelers) and free internet. In addition to their private beach (very fun to swim in the Mediterranean) they have lots of terraces, walkways and beautiful flowers everywhere. And the staff are wonderful We've stayed there twice and are returning again this July.
