Naples museum and Pompeii

Two women want to visit these sights. I would say one elderly. Any ideals? Tours I find are a Naples drive through.

Thanks for the replies. Elderly means 82 in November. Good walking ability.
My interests are Naples museum, on to Sorrento for the night, visit Pompei and on to Florence to meet
Up with others.

And the elderly woman can walk well? It's possible to do both the museum (I assume you mean the archaeological museum in Naples) and Pompeii Scavi can be done on your own, if you can get around on our own, connected by public transportation. That's how I did them a few years ago. If you are travel-savvy you should be able to handle it.

Genie, where will you be staying? Naples? Sorrento?
Can you describe more precisely what "elderly" means in the case of one of these ladies? Pompeii is completely pedestrianized and walking surfaces can be various levels of rough and uneven. The scavi area is also very large.

It sounds like you are trying to visit these as a day trip from Rome. Is that correct, or are you staying somewhere else? This will color the advice.

Exactly what type of tour are you looking for?
A tour of Pompeii and the Archeological Museum, a walking tour of Naples?
Can you be more precise.

When you arrive at Napoli Centrale, take your bags to this left luggage facility.

https://www.napolicentrale.it/en/service/detail/left-luggage

Take a taxi to the Museum or walk out of the station, cross the street to the metro station, and take line 2 to the Museo stop. The Museum is a block away. Purchase your ticket and Audio guide. You'll have to give them a picture ID, drivers license is acceptable.

Do the reverse to get back to the station. Retrieve your luggage and follow the signs to the Circumvesuvian, take this train to Sorrento.

The next day take the same train to the Pompeii Scavi Villa dei Mestri stop. There is luggage storage at this station downstairs in the tunnel under the track. It's about a 1 1/2 block walk to the Pompeii entrance. Finishing with Pompeii, head back to Napoli central for your journey to Florence.

Hope this is of some help.

Month of the year? Note that Pompeii has ankle-twisting ancient stone roads, long distances, sun and heat. No golf cart option, even for money. But visit Pompeii if you possibly can. With car service to the door, Herculaneum is less physically demanding. Villa Oplontis much smaller, tiny even, but even less grueling.

Edit: “On to Florence” is maybe a misnomer. Florence is well connected by train, but Sorrento is 180 degrees away from Florence. This is a valuable detour from Rome, but a substantial one.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the information. Another question. How do I select a cab that I should take? The last time I was in Italy and in this area was 18 years ago and at that time I was with my son. So this is somewhat of a different kind of trip because I’m with ladies. But I have traveled a little

Really find your information

How do I select a cab? The last time I was in Italy was 18 years ago and I was in Naples and Pompeii but at that time I was jelly with my son.

I think people very very much for their answers I got exactly what I wanted

genie, you’ll have to sift through it for your specific needs, but this old discussion will help you:

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/how-do-i-get-from-pompeii-to-positano-is-there-a-direct-route

I don’t want to alarm you, but Naples taxi drivers (as opposed to black car drivers recommended by us or your hotel) have a reputation for trying to add fees to a flat-rate trip. For that reason it can be smart to download and print the Naples government PDF of the flat rates. If you have a dispute you can wave it around or point to your destination’s flat rate!

I personally liked the Farnese Marbles better than the crowded Pompeii relics in the museum ... ... well, except for the erotic fresco galleries! But many visitors have no idea that the mosaics and bronzes AT Pompeii are replicas. Except for Villa if the Mysteries.

Here's the fixed rate for taxis in Naples.

https://www.napoliunplugged.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Tariffe_taxi_2017.pdf

Enlarge it and Print it and take it with you.

As you exit the Naples station, the taxi rank is right outside. There's usually someone there to guide customers to the right size cab for their party. Show him the tarrif sheet and they'll direct you. Before you get in the cab, show it to the driver to confirm the price.

There should be a taxi rank by the Museum too.
Either across the street or around the corner by the bus stop.

Edit: this map might help. Enlarge and print.

http://www.unicocampania.it/files/mappe/Napoli2016.pdf

It doesn't show taxis, but does show the bus stops, the bus #s and the arrows point the direction they travel.
