We will be in Naples in late October 2013 for one day - we'll be on a cruise. Do you have experience with the Naples Metro System? Rick's Med Cruise Ports book has a bias toward bus transportation in Naples. The Metro seems to be simpler in some ways. I'm just trying to get to and from the Archaeological Museum and Mater Dei Metro Station areas. Are there any safety or security concerns?
Just take a bus from the port. No safety issue beyond the routine caution about pickpockets. We will be there on Oct 19th and plan to take the bus, a few minutes from the dock, and then follow Steves' walking tour back to the harbor with a stop for pizza along the way. When you mention Metro are you looking for a subway or a tram?
Naples' metro is modern. The two lines opened one in the 1990's and one about 5 years ago. The issue may be where you need to go, because it may not go where you need to go. The Molo Beverello (ferry dock) for example is some blocks from the closest metro station (Universita'). But if it works for where you need to go, there is nothing wrong with Naples' metro. it's very nice in fact. In terms of safety it is safe, however, as in any public transport system, you have to be on alert for pickpockets, who generally like to operate on crowded places, such as buses and trains at peak hours. Wear a money belt and keep an eye on your bags and purses if the train is crowded.
Thanks. We're going to try it.
I took the metro from near the museum to the train station last October, in late afternoon. I got a seat and the ride was pleasant.
