We are a party of four, traveling to Naples, Italy for the first time. We are arriving and departing by train. We need recommendations for lodging near the historic district that is clean, safe and close to public transportation. We are open to hotels, apartments and/or B&B. Any help is greatly appreciated.

We stayed near the waterfront in Chiaia district, lovely. Hotel Alabardieri.
I stayed at the Hotel Art Resort Galleria Umberto which was near the Piazza del Plebiscito and Cafe Gambrinus, right near the Toledo Metro stop and the Centrale Funicular. Take the funicular to the hilltop fortress for sweeping views of the city, the Bay of Naples, Capri and Vesuvius. A great restaurant right near the hotel is Osteria Il Gobbetto. The hotel is on the fourth floor of the Galleria, is a bit quirky with large, clean rooms and views over the interior atrium of the Galleria.
You might have a look at this hotel - http://www.chiaiahotel.com/napoli/ . It's located in a nice area and only a short walk from the decadent Gran Caffè Gambrinus - https://grancaffegambrinus.com/en/s . Once you're seated there, you may never want to leave!
I stayed at hotel Chaia some yrs ago. Vgd area, quiet nice brfast. Decor is classic to Old fashion but clean. Areas in Naples can be iffy gritty, so make sure.
We stayed at Palazzo Decumani. It is a very nice hotel in the historic city center. Close to a lot of restaurants and very safe area. We walked everywhere we went. I do not know how far from the train station it is as we arrived in Naples by plane and left by private car.
