We are aware of petty theft in Italy, but how safe is Naples right now?
Kathy, I don't know of any specific warnings for Naples at the moment, so I'm sure it's as "safe" as usual. For travel in Naples, it's a good idea to be extra vigilant, wear a Money Belt and stay out of "dodgy" areas, especially at night. On my last visit, there was a Police van permanently parked in the Piazza near Via Chiaia, and it appeared to be there 24-hours a day. I found the area around Piazza Trieste e Trento and Via Chiaia to be very safe even at night (my Hotel was on Via Chiaia). The Gambrinus Bar is usually extremely busy well into the evenings. Happy travels!
I was in Naples at the beginning of March for a week. I was warned about pickpockets, and took appropriate actions. I did not travel with my wallet or any valuables (cellphone), just enough cash for the evening. I was staying at the Royal Continental, across from the Castel dell'Ovo, on the waterfront. There were many restaurants and bars in the surrounding area to choose from. I had no problems. It is best to get a reference for a known, reputable taxi company, if you are going to be taking cabs, and use it exclusively. Good luck and enjoy!
