naples,it.

i think i would use naples as a base to day visit places near the amalfi..that said, where is a safe area , close to transportation, restaurants and the sites most tourist want to see in naples? (so many rumors about naples safety.)

I think the bad reputation that Naples has is generally not based in reality. Sure, you need to be careful in any city (as a foreign tourist or at home) but if you use common sense, I think you should be fine.

That being said, if I wanted to visit the Amalfi coast I would use Sorrento as my base - it's a nicer place to be, and a heckuvalot closer.

Ditto to David's vote, Steve. I'd stay in Naples for Naples attractions, Herculaneum and maybe Pompeii (although that one is just as easily done from Sorrento) but stay in Sorrento if the goal is to explore the Amalfi Coast. As he said, it's a more convenient location for that region.

Agree that Naples is overall safe. But I would not use Naples as a base for day trips to the Amalfi. If you plan to see the Amalfi, I recommend staying in Sorrento or one of the towns on the Coast.
