Naples hydrofoil: will it give me whiplash?

Hi all,

Apologies for what may seem like a silly question. I was rear-ended last year for having the audacity to stop at a red light and have dealt with mild whiplash since. My neck is much better but I'm still careful, which is why I wanted to know: how bumpy do the hydrofoils from Naples to the islands get?

We're looking at the hydrofoil from Naples to/from Ischia on May 24-27, and if the sea is rough, then how bad would the ride be for someone recovering from whiplash?

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

I've never heard of hydrofoils giving whiplash. They usually start pretty slow then acquire velocity gradually, they are not rockets or fighter jets like Top Gun. You are more likely to get a whiplash from a taxi driver driving a Tesla, which have rather strong acceleration.

I found it comfortable. If the sea is too rough, the ferries aren’t likely to run.

Thank you both for your input!

Very true about the Tesla taxis...that gave me a good laugh!

I have not taken that particular ferry, but the ferries from Sorrento tended to have airline style seats with good neck support. (And no outdoor seating or standing.) But at peak hours, including the last two of the day, we had to stand in a crowd.).

Hi there,

I took the ferry from Naples to Capri last year in early June, and we didn’t have any issues with the weather or rough seas — the ride was pretty smooth overall. Of course, conditions can vary depending on the day, but hopefully, your trip will be just as calm.

If you still have your neck brace, perhaps bring it with you just in case?
