Naples Hotel and Taxi Driver working together in a counterfeit 100 Euro Scam

Hi Rick,
It saddens me to report a particularly nasty scam perpetrated by a hotel and taxi driver working together in taking tourists back to the airport at Capodichino Napoli Italy.

This is a lengthy account and so I ask for the readers patience because the detailed evidence is crucial in order to warn travellers.

The three star hotel was very nice and a taxi was booked at reception for return to the airport early the next morning.
The vehicle used was a minibus and it filled up with us 9 tourists, with 1 empty seat left.

My suspicions were aroused when the taxi driver announced upon our leaving the hotel that we were going to the central railway station at piazza Garibaldi very quickly, because this is in the opposite direction to the airport and this was a hotel pickup service.

In addition, only two passengers were English as the rest were French but the announcement was only made in English.
On route to the station the driver received a telephone call on his mobile and shouted back to the passengers a room number and surname, to which I replied that is me; he then passed the phone to me saying that it was the hotel calling. The hotel receptionist spoke to say that the 100 Euro note for which I had just paid for my accomodation was counterfeit. I said this was impossible and he asked where did I get the note, to which I replied a bank. He said that I would have to pay again. I asked how did he know it was my note to which he said that was the only one in his till. I said that I could not see his till to confirm this.

Bearing in mind that I had paid 20 minutes before leaving and so he had ample time to scrutinise my note at the time and that he gave me a receipt for full payment of over 235 Euros, of which the 100 note was only one: I said that he was wrong. He then said that he would call the police at the airport - I said go right ahead. He then hung up. I passed the phone back to the driver who then spoke to the receptionist very briefly concluding the call with a laugh.

We then proceeded to drive right past the railway station and then back around onto the Autostrada to the airport, without any stops being made.

Needless to say, there was no police awaiting me and the other tourists at the airport 15 minutes later.
I confronted the driver, and I being fluent in Italian accused the Hotel receptionist of pulling a vicious scam - the driver was surprised that I could speak Italian and was apologetic and he said that these things happen, but I consider it fortunate for him that I paid him for this journey and I told so, not wanting it that two wrongs make a right.

What made this scam particularly nasty was the way in which it was targeted at what was thought to be English/American tourists and also who do not speak Italian.

Naples is a beautiful city, albeit many areas are very run down, the legacy of defunct industries and living standards - it will not prevent me returning.

I had read before departing to Italy about this scam on the Internet but I never imagined it would happen to me - let the buyer beware!
I thank you for taking the time to read this post.

First, Rick Steves doesn't respond to this forum, it's just travelers like you. I'm sorry you had this experience, but glad you were able to handle It. I have had nothing but good experiences with taxi drivers in Napoli, but it's good to have a first-hand account of what happened to you.

Thanks Zoe, I appreciate your reply

This is a nasty scam perpetrated by the Hotel receptionist and with a Taxi driver as his accomplice.

Travelling as a family this incident caused both myself and my daughter some distress, especially as we are both of Italian descent.
We are happy to be able to give a warning to others, especially to English language speakers only.
Thanks once again
Carlo

Would you share the name of the hotel with me, please. And what is the name of the scam on the internet? OK to PM me.

Carlo, I'm not sure I understood this correctly from your detailed account...but was the thinking here that the cab driver would just drop you off at the rail station so (just) you could return to the hotel with a new, clean 100 Euro note? How would that work if you had a flight to catch? Also if you are fluent in Italian, I'm wondering why did you not speak up or question the cabbie about the out-of-way trip to the train station (I assume the meter was running, right? or perhaps this was a flat fee fare?). Perhaps that would have alerted him that there is a fluent speaker in the vehicle who won't be duped. Yes, this definitely sounds questionable/shady and you should be willing to name the hotel, if this is true.

Other explanations are possible for parts of your report. I can't consider this a definite, coordinated scam, nor a reason not to pay the agreed price for your airport transfer. What did the driver say, before hanging up with a laugh? Did he say, "well, I guess our scam is not working this time?"

Certainly, I hope that other travelers have your presence of mind to say that, no, you would not give the hotel more money. They must check their cash when they receive it, just as you must check your change.

Hi Agnes,

The journey to the train station was a ploy as it was down ordinary streets which had little traffic at that time and so allowed the driver to take the call whilst driving, whereas the proper route would have been the Autostrada, the slip road for which we passed enroute to the station which is in the opposite direction.

No stop was made at all, the vehicle was a minibus, with only one seat available, and I envisaged that if I accepted the Hotel receptionists story, that the driver then would simply turn the minibus around and head straight back to the hotel once again along a quiet traffic free route, in order that I make my 100 Euro payment, in cash or by credit card, to the receptionist, which in these circumstances would open up yet another can of worms...................

As I was seated in the back row of seats in the minibus I could not hear the drivers mobile telephone conversation with the hotel receptionist, other than his concluding laughter, when he threw his head back laughing as he did so.

This was a co-ordinated plan by a hotel receptionist with a minibus/taxi driver in order to get 100 Euros from an English/American speaker only by claiming that the 100 Euro note was a counterfeit but after having had full time to check it and issuing an invoice.

Unfortunately for them I speak Italian, am Italian, and I confronted the driver at the airport about the unsavoury nature of this plot - some would have said do not pay him as the accomplice but I did pay. For what it is worth, he was embarrased and apologetic.

I really enjoyed my time in Naples as did my daughter, and I shall return - two people do not make a city - Naples is wonderful, just be wary and do your research by books and the Internet and always, always go with your gut feeling.

Hi Laura
Thank you for reply
Given the nature of the evidence at the time I considered this a well co-ordinated plan. My daughter however thought that what the hotel receptionist was saying was true and I had to calm her fears that the Polizia were going to arrest us at the airport.
Needless to say, the driver beforehand when he came in to the hotel reception, spoke to the receptionist in order to collect us passengers - what the exact nature of that conversation was I cannot say, but he did not simply drive up and we got in.
C'est la vie
